ARCHIVED - The only way is up: fuel prices in Spain continue to rise
A number of factors will push the price of fuel even higher in Spain during 2023
Since the Spanish government eliminated the 20 cent per litre fuel bonus for most drivers at the end of 2022, the cost of petrol and diesel has naturally gone up, and an average 55 litre tank now costs around 10 euros more to fill. But even without the bonus, after taking a welcome dip for a few weeks before Christmas, the cost of fuel in general has shot up once more.
Today, the average price of 95 octane petrol is 1.62 euros/litre, while in the case of diesel the price has risen to 1.69 euros/litre.
To add insult to injury, a number of different regulations will come into play throughout 2023 which look set to hit drivers even harder.

European Fuel Quality Directive
This piece of legislation specifies that countries like Spain will need to increase the percentage of biofuels present in its fuel this year. The proportion currently sits at 7.5% but it will eventually have to get up to 10.5% and given the fact that biofuels are much more expensive, this will most likely be reflected in the cost at the pumps.
Hydrocarbons
The special tax on hydrocarbons has been responsible for numerous price hikes over the years but because the amount is different for each fuel type, drivers of diesel cars in Spain have come off better. However, the EU is forever pushing the Spanish government to equalise the tax between petrol and diesel and it looks likely that they will get their way this year, increasing fuel prices further.
