The weather is set to stay changeable for the last week of August, following the storms and heavy rain that have already hit different parts of the country in recent days. A new low pressure system is due to arrive on Wednesday August 26 and will strengthen further on Thursday August 27, bringing a rainier and cooler end to the week than usual across large parts of western Spain.

 

An unsettled day is expected, driven by a low pressure system sitting near the British Isles. Fronts linked to this system will move across Galicia, Asturias, western Castilla y León and Extremadura, bringing very cloudy or overcast skies along with locally heavy and persistent rain and thunderstorms, especially in southwestern Galicia. Rain could also spread to other parts of the Cantabrian coast and Castile-La Mancha.

 

There's a smaller chance of light afternoon showers in the southeast, Melilla and the Balearic Islands, along with showers developing in the Pyrenees that could turn heavy with thunder.

 

Maximum temperatures will fall across most of the country, quite significantly in some inland areas, though they'll actually rise along the Mediterranean coast and nearby inland areas.

 

Yellow alerts for high temperatures are in place in Andalucía and the Valencian Community, while the Balearic Islands remain under an orange alert for a meteotsunami.

 

Conditions should start to settle as the low pressure system moves away. That said, cloudy or overcast skies are still expected in the northwest, with light rain in Galicia that could reach the Cantabrian coast and Castilla y León, clearing up by the afternoon.

 

Light showers are possible along the Mediterranean coast, in the southeast and in the Balearic Islands, while western Andalucía and Murcia could see heavier showers and some strong thunderstorms.

 

Maximum temperatures will rise across the western half of the country while falling in the islands and the eastern third of the mainland, particularly in the southeast. Minimum temperatures will drop almost everywhere. The meteotsunami alert remains in place for the Balearic Islands.

 

High pressure will bring a much more settled day across most of the country, with clear or sunny skies expected on the mainland and in the Balearic Islands, aside from some high cloud and no rain. Cloudier conditions will stick around in the northwest and along the Cantabrian coast.

 

Maximum temperatures will rise almost everywhere, with the exception of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Cantabrian, Catalan and Valencian coasts, where they'll drop slightly.

 

Another settled day is expected across most of the mainland and the Balearic Islands, with largely clear or sunny skies. However, a front moving in from the northwest could bring cloudy or overcast skies and moderate rain to Galicia, the Cantabrian coast and northern Castilla y León.

 

Temperatures will rise pretty much everywhere, with maximums only dropping in Galicia, Asturias and the Gulf of Cádiz. The Ebro and Guadalquivir valleys will see highs above 35°C.
