ARCHIVED - Temperature of the Mediterranean 22-23 degrees off Valencian coastline
Aemet have shared the latest measurements showing how warm the Mediterranean is at the moment
As of June 15 2021, the temperature of the Mediterranean off the Alicante coastline was around 22 ºC, slightly lower than further along the coastline of the Valencia and Castellón provinces of the Comunidad Valenciana, where the maximum temperature measurements were in excess of 23 ºC.
This data is obtained by measuring the water temperature from the TIROS satellite using IR imaging techniques.
It is now becoming obvious from the increasing number of non-typical weather events and other environmental indicators that the Mediterranean is warming and last week the World Wildlife Fund published a detailed report highlighting the effects of this warming and confirming that the Mediterranean is the fastest-warming sea in the world.
The WWF reports that the Med. is increasing its temperature at a rate 20 per cent quicker than the global average as a result of climate change, and it is also under severe pressure from overfishing, pollution, maritime trade and coastal development.
