Supermarkets in Spain open on May 1: Hours for Lidl, Mercadona and more
This Thursday May 1 is a public holiday across Spain, with many businesses also opting to take May 2 as a vacation

We’ve only just left Easter behind but there’s yet another public holiday upon us – Thursday May 1, commonly known as May Day or Labour Day. Unlike some other national festivos, there are no firm regulations regarding opening hours: each business is free to decide whether or not to open (and at what hours) during the holidays.
Here's a breakdown of the opening hours for major supermarkets in Spain:
Mercadona
Closed nationwide on May 1, in line with the company's policy of not opening on public holidays.
Carrefour
Some stores will be open, while others will be closed. Use the store finder on the Carrefour website to check the hours for your local store.
Lidl
Similar to Carrefour, some Lidl stores will be open on May 1, while others will be closed. Check the store locator on the Lidl website to plan your shopping trip.
DIA
No uniform policy applies, with some stores operating normally and others closed. Use the search engine on the DIA website to find out if your local store will be open.
Alcampo
All Alcampo stores will be closed on May 1, one of the few holidays of the year when the supermarket chain observes a complete shutdown.
May 2 is actually only an official holiday in Madrid but since it falls on a Friday this year, many businesses will decide to close and make the most of an impromptu long weekend.
Remember to check the opening hours for your local store before heading out, as hours may vary depending on the location and region. With some supermarkets open and others closed, it's essential to plan ahead to avoid any last-minute shopping disappointments.
