April has roared into Spain with an uncharacteristic ferocity and while coastal areas are scrambling to repair beaches that were all but washed away in time for the Easter influx of tourists, inland Alicante woke up to an altogether different scene on Wednesday morning.

Municipalities such as l'Alcoià, el Comtat and part of l'Alacantí were blanketed in snow overnight, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reporting that snow covered the peaks of Aitana, Font Roja, Montcabrer, Serella and Mariola at between 800 and 1,000 metres.

With weather more reminiscent of mid-winter, some points of the Sierra de la Serella were buried in snowfall more than 10 centimetres thick.

The surrounding areas of Alcoy, Agres, Onil, Beneixama, Penaguila and Banyeres de Mariola dawned a brilliant white while in the early hours of the morning, significant snowfall was recorded in Xixona, particularly heavy in Puerto de la Carrasqueta.
