ARCHIVED - Spanish fishermen save man from heart attack on ghost yacht
The crew of a trawler spotted the sailing yacht adrift off the coast of Javea in the Marina Alta area
The fast-thinking actions of Spanish fisherman from Javea have saved the life of a heart attack victim who was discovered semi-conscious on a sailing yacht adrift off the Aicante coast.
Crew on board the trawler Sol Tercer were collecting the day's catch from fishing nets around midday on Thursday August 4 when they noticed a yacht in good condition that appeared to be drifting with one of the two engines running.
At first, it looked as though there was no one on board, but the sighting caught the crew´s attention as it's extremely unusual for a yacht to be sailing in these particular waters.
Once they had finished collecting their catch, the fishermen began sounding the horn and called out several times, to check if there was anybody aboard the yacht, but they got no response.
So they approached the boat and tied their own to it to gain access. Inside they found a semi-conscious man who appeared to have suffered a heart attack.
The sailors immediately called the emergency services and once they had raised the alarm, the Sol Tercer trawler towed the pleasure boat to Javea port.
A rescue helicopter from the Valencia base then airlifted the heart attack victim, whose indentity has not been made public, to La Fe Hospital in Valencia where he remains in a "guarded" condition.
