It’s common to see drivers in Spain sporting sunglasses, especially in the summer months, to shield their eyes from the sun and improve visibility on the road. While this is generally a good practice, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is issuing a clear warning about certain types of sunglasses that could land drivers with a fine.

 

The key rule is that drivers must always maintain full freedom of movement and have an unobstructed field of vision while behind the wheel. Article 18 of the Traffic Law states the driver must ensure their own safety as well as that of other vehicle occupants and road users.

 

According to the DGT, sunglasses falling into Category 4, which offer the darkest tinting, blocking up to 98% of sunlight, are not recommended for driving. These glasses reduce visibility in darker conditions such as tunnels, shaded roads, or at dawn and dusk when light is dim. Wearing Category 4 sunglasses on the road can result in a fine of up to €200.

 

Experts advise choosing sunglasses in Category 2 or 3, which provide good protection without compromising visibility. These certified sunglasses often have the CE mark on one arm, signifying compliance with European safety standards.

 

For drivers who require vision correction, the DGT stresses the importance of wearing prescription lenses, including prescription sunglasses, when driving. Not doing so not only risks safety but can also lead to fines.

 

Many people opt for well-known brands, but the DGT’s main concern is safety rather than fashion. Ensuring clear vision on the road is non-negotiable.

 

The advice is clear: choose your sunglasses carefully, avoid excessively dark lenses, and always wear your prescribed correction to stay safe and avoid penalties on Spain’s roads.
