Spain still on high alert as forest fires continue across several regions
Despite some improvements, authorities warn that the risk of flare-ups remains high

Spain continues to face a very high risk of forest fires, with several outbreaks still posing serious challenges. Although the overall situation has improved since Sunday August 24, weather conditions remain unfavourable as rising temperatures, low humidity and strong winds hinder firefighting efforts.
Castilla y León remains the main focus of concern, with six fires at severity level 2, the maximum category. Five are located in León province, in Fasgar, La Baña, Igüeña, Garaño and Molinaseca.
The latter two erupted on Sunday with great intensity, forcing the evacuation of eleven towns and affecting more than 700 residents. Authorities have warned that the Garaño fire is currently “developing very unfavourably”.
In Asturias, officials described the situation as “very positive” after significant progress in containing fires. The front at Degaña has been brought under control, while the blazes in Somiedo and Genestoso are advancing favourably.

Galicia continues to struggle, particularly in Ourense, where three fires remain active. The devastating Larouco fire, which destroyed 30,000 hectares, has been stabilised, while the fire in Chandrexa de Queixa is close to full containment.
However, the Carballeda de Valdeorras-Casaio fire has already consumed 4,000 hectares near Pena Trevinca, the region’s highest peak.
According to Civil Protection, there are currently fourteen active fires across Spain, with twelve towns evacuated and 29 localities confined. Authorities stress that while improvements are being made in Galicia and Asturias, the situation in Castilla y León remains particularly complicated, requiring the deployment of the majority of national firefighting resources.
