ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update September 7: incidence falls but death rate remains high
The total death toll in Spain since the beginning of the pandemic has now surpassed 85,000

The cumulative incidence rate of the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic continues its steady decline in Spain and the risk level remains at medium, with only Extremadura and Melilla now registering more than 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the Ministry of Health on Tuesday September 7, the 14-day figure has dropped another 16 points in the last 24 hours to sit at 160.73 cases, down from 176.64 on Monday.
The 7-day rate is also well under half of the fortnightly figure at 61.44 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, indicating that this downward trend should continue.
On Tuesday, the Ministry reported 5,246 new coronavirus cases throughout Spain, of which 2,311 have been diagnosed in the last 24 hours alone. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,892,640.
Asturias maintains Spain’s lowest incidence rate (63.80), followed by the Canary Islands (102.90) and the Valencian Community (122.30).
Age groups
The highest cumulative incidence rate over a two week period remains with the youngest age group, those aged between 12 and 19 years, with 269 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This is hardly surprising since this group was the last in the vaccination campaign, but the Spanish government is now redoubling its efforts to fully immunise this population, and currently 45.4 per cent of youngsters have been double jabbed.
Hospitalisations and Fatalities
There are currently 5,584 patients admitted to hospitals, 192 fewer than on Monday and 1,349 patients in the country’s ICUs, 33 fewer than the previous day. In the last 24 hours, there have been a total of 516 admissions and 696 people have been discharged. Overall, occupancy rates have improved with Covid patients accounting for 14.74% of intensive care beds and just 4.72% of beds on the ward.
138 new fatalities have been reported (up five from Monday), bringing the death toll since the beginning of the pandemic up to 85,066.
Vaccinations
A total of 34,418,544 people have now been fully immunised against coronavirus in Spain, while 36,889,887 have received at least one dose. As the return to schools and colleges advances, the government has also improved its vaccination rate for the younger population, with 45.4% of youngsters now fully immunised compared with just 27.2% last week.
