Spain approves big changes to driving licence renewals for over 65s
The measures will be applied EU-wide and will involve more demanding medical checks for older drivers
With the onset of the new year, the European Union has set a short-term goal of reducing traffic fatalities, since the number of deaths on the roads in Spain and other nations has remained steady despite efforts to improve safety measures.
To achieve this objective, the Transport Committee of the European Parliament has approved a new measure that will impact drivers aged 65 and older when they renew their licenses. The tests they must pass will become stricter, particularly with regard to medical requirements.
What changes has the EU established for drivers over 65?
After several studies revealed an increase in the accident rate of older motorists, the EU has decided that the psychotechnical (‘psicotécnico’) tests required at licence renewal will be more detailed and comprehensive.
From now on, a medical doctor will have to certify that drivers over the age of 65 don’t have any vision problems, rather than the psychotechnical exam.
This measure has been in force in countries like Finland for a few years.
What are the licence renewal requirements for over 65s?
Motorists ages 65 and older must apply for a driving licence renewal every five years. On the other hand, drivers aged between 18 and 64 only have to do this every 10 years.
In February last year, the renewal period was reduced to every two years for motorists over the age of 70.
However, it’s worth bearing in mind that all of these timeframes can be reduced if a doctor feels it is necessary.
How much does it cost retirees to renew their drivers licence?
The basic fee for licence renewal throughout Spain is 24.58 euros, in addition to the psychotechnical exam, which can cost anywhere from 20 to 60 euros and must be carried out in a Driver Centre authorised by the DGT.
Over 70s only have to pay for the psychotechnical test as the renewal itself is free.
