Spain and Gibraltar deadlocked over airport as Brexit deal stalls
Negotiations for a post-Brexit deal for Gibraltar hit another roadblock as Spain insists on control over the airport
Efforts to finalise a long-awaited post-Brexit agreement for Gibraltar have reached another impasse, with Spain maintaining a firm stance on securing a say over the territory's airport. While negotiations had seemed to be progressing, Spain's continued focus on the airstrip has reignited tensions and slowed the process once again.
The latest setback comes despite repeated assurances from both British and Spanish officials that a deal was within reach. Gibraltar's Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, expressed his frustration, stating that Spain's approach to the airport issue remains the "biggest obstacle" in sealing an agreement.
"The solution must respect the UK's and Gibraltar's red lines," he said.
Spanish officials, however, argue that joint management of the airport is a reasonable expectation. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares reaffirmed Spain's position, insisting that the arrangement must align with European Union standards.
"If we are to reach a treaty, it must be on the basis of cooperation and shared responsibility," he stated.
The dispute over Gibraltar's airport is not new and has repeatedly emerged as a stumbling block in Brexit negotiations. The UK and Spain had previously hinted at a possible resolution in talks last July, when Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed confidence that a deal was imminent. However, progress has been slower than expected.
This latest impasse follows a series of developments affecting Gibraltar's border arrangements. In December, the EU granted Spain the authority to suspend the proposed new entry-exit system at the border if security concerns arise, further complicating negotiations. Additionally, UK decisions on other overseas territories, such as the Chagos Islands dispute, have raised concerns about Gibraltar's future status.
For the 15,000 people who cross the border daily for work, and the thousands more affected by ongoing uncertainty, the delays are a source of frustration. Businesses, commuters and local residents are eager for a resolution that ensures stability without compromising sovereignty.
While discussions continue, the future of Gibraltar's relationship with the EU – and the fate of its airport – remains uncertain. For now, negotiators will have to find common ground or risk further delays in securing a deal that has already taken years to materialise.
