ARCHIVED - Second earthquake strikes Vega Baja region of Alicante in less than 24 hours
Los Montesinos on the Costa Blanca has registered its third quake in four months
Seismic movement has been recorded in the Vega Baja town of Los Montesinos, Alicante province, for the second time in less than 24 hours.
According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN) an earthquake of magnitude 1.8 was registered at a depth of 5km northeast of Los Montesinos at 6.52pm on Tuesday November 22, very close to the La Mata lagoon and also to the epicentre of an earlier earthquake in the early hours.
"Although the fact that two occurred on the same day may worry many, they are movements typical of the area," recalls Proyecto Mastral.
A 2.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 1.30am on Tuesday morning with the epicentre located at a depth of 4km to the east of Los Montesinos in an area known as El Chaparral and in the middle of Laguna de la Mata.
According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the seismic movement was felt in Ciudad Quesada, Rojales, with an intensity of II-III and in Torrevieja with an intensity of II.
Three quakes higher than 1.5 on the Richter scale have now been recorded in Los Montesinos this year, with 55 registered in Alicante province as a whole so far in 2022.
