ARCHIVED - San Pedro residents protest over ongoing flooding problem
Residents of the El Mojón region of San Pedro del Pinatar took to the streets to protest over the continued flooding problems in the area
Both long-term residents and holiday-makers alike marched to the Town Hall of San Pedro del Pinatar on Monday, July 19, banging pots and pans as they went, to ask councillors for solutions to the frequent floods in El Mojón, which have been exacerbated by the building of the Pinatar Arena, according to one protestor.
Since the mayor, Visitación Martínez, is currently in self-isolation having contracted Covid, three councillors met with representatives from the group to discuss the current projects which are underway to alleviate the problems.
According to the councillors, avoiding floods in El Mojón is one of the priority objectives of the Government Team, and the mayor has been demanding action for years from the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), who is responsible for the management of all waterways in Murcia.
As part of its Zero Discharge Plan, the government has agreed to consider channelling the Rambla de las Siete Higueras, which would reduce the amount of water that flows into El Mojón during heavy rains and that will include actions in San Pedro del Pinatar and Pilar de la Horadada.
The Zero Discharge Plan has been established primarily to reduce the amount of saline in the waters of the Campo de Cartagena by redirecting it to the Mediterranean in an attempt to reverse the deterioration in the marine environment of the Mar Menor lagoon.
In addition, the Region of Murcia has asked the central government to include the flood park project in El Mojón within the Next Generation Funds of the European Union.
A resident spokesperson insisted that the government would have to provide further details of the Plan and the expected timeline. “If not, we will have to go to court,” they said.
