ARCHIVED - Russian fugitive wanted for 1.4 million euro fraud is arrested in Benidorm
The 57-year-old woman was detained at a hotel in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province
The National Police in Benidorm have arrested a 57-year-old Russian woman wanted by the authorities in her home country over a 1.4 million euro insurance fraud.
A European Arrest Warrant was issued for the extradition of the fugitive who faces a maximum sentence for misappropriation of 10 years in prison.
According to police sources, the woman began working on behalf of an insurance company in Russia in 2011, and over the next three years allegedly sold a total of 42,243 contracts, receiving more than 1,400,000 euros in premiums for which she was entitled to a commission of just over €160,000.
However, she allegedly failed to transfer the remainder of the cash to the insurance company, committing fraud by appropriation.
Investigations by Russian police led the authorities to believe the suspect had left the country on a flight to Alicante in January 2020, and an arrest warrant for extradition was issued in August 2021.
It's believed the alleged fraudster chose Alicante province because "it has a large colony of Russian nationals", and she was eventually located at a Benidorm hotel where she was staying with a Spanish man who police have confirmed "has nothing to do with the fraud".
The Interpol office in Madrid has notified the Russian authorities and the Central Court of Instruction number three of the Audiencia Nacional has begun the procedure for extradition.
