Revealed: The Spanish cities where they speak the best English... can you guess where they are?
Here are the places that have the highest level of English language proficiency in Spain
Spaniards are not famous for their fantastic level of English, but there are areas of the country where the general level of English proficiency is higher than others.
It may come as a surprise to some, but at the top of the list of places in Spain that speak the best English, Galicia is positioned right next to Madrid at the most proficient. With a score of 564 points, Galicia leads the national ranking together with the Community of Madrid, which obtained 551 points.
These results come from the annual report on English levels in adults prepared by Education First (EF) and they track the proficiency of areas in Spain for their levels of English in adults. Both Galicia and the community of Madrid are the only ones to achieve a mastery of English classified as 'high' in the whole of Spain.
The study, based on the results of tests carried out on 2.1 million non-native English speakers in 116 countries and regions, highlights that the national average in Spain is 538 points, placing it at an 'average' level.
Vigo, a city in northwestern Spain's Galicia, stands out for its score of 585 points in the English test. This score positions the city as the best in terms of its command of English in all of Spain. In second place was Gijón (575 points), and Zaragoza (565 points) came in third to complete the national podium.
The regions of Asturias (548 points), Catalonia (546 points), the Basque Country (545 points), Navarra (545 points) and Aragón (543 points) exceed the national average, although they remain in the 'medium' level range.
At the other end of the rankings conducted by Education First, Extremadura (501 points) and La Rioja (512 points) occupy the last places in the autonomous ranking.
Young people aged 21 to 25 in Spain have increased their level of English, going from 551 to 552 points compared to the year before. However, the 18 to 20 age group has decreased from 514 to 509 points, and remains at the 'average' level.
Overall as a country, Spain ranks 36th in the world in terms of English proficiency, with an overall score of 538 points. This score was a drop compared to the previous year's score, when it ranked 35th. In Europe the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal all scored very high on the test and recorded national scores classified as 'very high'.
