Recycle and get a free tree: One Murcia town's innovative ecoproject
Águilas council has launched a scheme to encourage people to recycle more and to combat desertification
The dangerous spread of desertification, the process of grassland and shrubland vegetation plants in arid and semi-arid areas being lost, is a serious environmental problem in the municipality of Águilas, Murcia, as is the illegal dumping of trash.
That’s why the Águilas Councillor for Cleaning, Noelia Ruano, has announced the launch of a new edition of the project “Dale vida a tus residuos” (“Give life to your waste”), which has been developed by the Town Council with the dual aim of halting desertification and encouraging locals to recycle instead of fly-tipping.
So how does the project work? It’s very simple: anyone who brings their rubbish to the town’s “Punto Limpio” recycling point can take, free of charge, young native forest trees that can then be planted in the ground to repopulate the municipality’s forests. These include native species such as Aleppo pines, stone pines, elms, carob trees, fig trees and more, which will serve to help restore the local fauna.
The idea is, on the one hand, to make people more aware of the use of the Punto Limpio recycling rubbish tips so that trash is not just thrown on the ground, and at the same time to get people involved, hands on, in the reforestation of the municipality by creating small oases to prevent desertification from continuing to advance in the town.
All you need to do to get your free sapling is to take your recycling over to the Punto Limpio and ask the staff there about exchanging it for a tree. It couldn’t be easier!
If you need more information about what kind of rubbish can be taken to the Punto Limpio, please call 0034 628 89 27 62, or visit the Punto Limpio from Monday to Friday mornings between 9.30am and 1.30pm or between 4pm and 6.30pm (in summer only) or between 5pm and 7.30pm (in summer only); and on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 1.30pm.
