ARCHIVED - Project to restore Castillo de San Fernando in Alicante city given cash injection
More than quarter of a million euros is being invested in improving access to Alicante's historic San Fernando Castle (Castillo de San Fernando).
Alicante City Council will spend almost €267,000 over the next six months creating an exterior footbridge and pavilion as part of a wider project to improve the experience of visiting the fortress.
The Castle of San Fernando was built during the War of Independence in the part of the mountain closest to the city, with the purpose of completing the defensive system of Alicante, which has the Castle of Santa Bárbara at its defensive centre.
It was designed with the utmost urgency by the engineer Pablo Ordovás given the rapidity of the French advance, between 1809 and 1812, although in the end, was never actually used and was left in an abandoned state until recently.
The urgency with which it was built forced the engineer to adapt the fortress to the irregularities of the terrain of Mount Tossal, the reason why the monument is such an unusual structure, combining polygonal bastions with a circular bastion.
The long-term aim of the council is to restore the fortress, and make it a tourism attraction as well as a functional part of the city infrastructure.
The latest phase of its restoration will include the creation of a new exterior walkway to improve access from the North Plaza.
Through the partial adaptation of the moat, a pathway will connect the new access to the castle itself.
There are also plans to build a "welcome pavilion" to allow for greater visibility.
"The recovery of the castle of San Fernando will enhance the heritage value and the historical and artistic character of the monument, as well as safeguard the original construction elements, preventing them from continuing to deteriorate and be lost forever," said Alicante City Council.
