ARCHIVED - Police shut down illegal toxic waste storage sites in Alicante
Four warehouses on a Crevillente industrial estate in the Baix Vinalopó area of Alicante province were storing hazardous waste
Police attached to the Valencian government have located four warehouses in Crevillente where toxic waste was being stored after detecting irregular movements at one of the sites with no apparent industrial activity.
National officers, together with the Guardia Civil's environmental protection unit, Seprona, investigated and discovered 60,000 litres of hazardous liquids, including used oil and lubricants, paint and solvents, in drums at all four units, covering 17,000 square metres in total.
Many of the drums were broken or damaged, with the contents leaking onto the floor, creating an environmental and fire risk.
Along with toxic liquids, officers found a large quantity of bales of used clothing and footwear, remains of plastics and worn-out tyres from garage workshops, along with mounds of tree pruning debris.
As part of a similar investigation, another uncontrolled dumping site was discovered at a warehouse in the Valenica town of Quart de Poblet.
Despite the fact smaller quantities of hazardous waste was being stored – such as asbestos cement and drums of oil – they were of "similar nature and danger", according to the Generalitat.
