ARCHIVED - Police officers shot during Alicante drug bust
Five Guardia Civil officers were injured during a raid in El Moralet, Alicante province
A suspected drug trafficker has been shot during an early morning raid on a house in El Moralet, on the border between Alicante and San Vicente del Raspeig. Four officers were injured when the criminal opened fire and a fifth agent was hurt as he tried to jump out of the way of the shots.
At around 7am, officers from the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) of the Alicante Command surrounded the drug den and tried several times to get the occupants, the target and his father, to open the door. When they were repeatedly ignored, the front door was forced open.
At that moment, the father of the drug trafficker opened fire on the officers with a hunting rifle. One man received the direct impact of a shot to the left arm, and the other three were injured by ricocheting bullets.
The agents were transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante but early reports suggest that none of their injuries are serious. The two suspects were arrested.
The property is a single-family house with two floors, about 80 square meters in area, which has several annexes, located on a plot of about 2,000 square meters on the outskirts of Alicante capital.
Guardia Civil in San Vicente have search warrants for four properties related to the drug operation in all, and a raid on a house in Torrellano has resulted in the seizure of large amounts of cocaine and marijuana buds and plants.
