ARCHIVED - Pedestrian-friendly makeover of Orihuela promenade gets European funding
Calvo Sotelo promenade in the Vega Baja municipality, Alicante, will undergo an extensive renovation
Marking the boundary between Orihuela centre and the San Juan suburb of Orihuela, Calvo Sotelo promenade has become a popular meeting place and the venue for weekly street markets.
Traditionally, the only time the promenade is closed to traffic is when these markets are taking place. For the last century, the promenade has maintained the appearance of a 'boulevard' with narrow pavements on both sides and a central area, again flanked by roads on either side.
However, this is all about to change.
Orihuela Council plans to completely remodel the area, and put an end to what has been panned "a pedestrian-unfriendly configuration".
The road connects Calle Alfonso XIII with Calle de Arriba, where the Miguel Hernandez House-Museum and orchard are located, hence the project name 'Camino a la higuera' (Road to the fig tree).
The renovation is budgeted at 642,000 euros, of which 471,600 euros will be financed through a European 'Next Generation grant to support markets and commercial urban areas.
"This project has been designed with the consensus of traders and neighbours," said Councillor for Markets, Ángel Luis Muñoz.

The aim is "to make the space more pedestrian-friendly, as 80% of it will be pedestrianised".
"The market activity, which is held twice a week, is enhanced and improved by this intervention, which will result in an attractive space for traders and tourists," said the councillor, adding that trade fairs will also be held on the new promenade.
The new-look Paseo Calvo Sotelo will have a single platform shared by vehicles and pedestrians, but only a central lane will be left for vehicles, which will be delimited by tree surrounds.
The space freed up for pedestrians will be paved with Portuguese terrazzo in ochre tones and energy-efficient lighting will be installed suspended on a catenary.
A children's play area will also be installed, as well as street furniture and two information screens.
In addition, during the works, drinking water, sewage and rainwater collection networks will be renovated.
And it's hoped this project will be continued with the renovation of Calle de Arriba and the renaturalisation of the sierra.
