ARCHIVED - April 23 Orihuela Mountain Bike Race
The 40km race in the Vega Baja region of Alicante province is open to "lovers of mountain biking and nature"
Places are fast running out to take part in this year's Orihuela Bike Race, the fifth annual event that is aimed at cyclists and nature lovers over the age of 15 and of all abilities.
The event will take place on April 23, from 9am, in the hamlet of Torremendo, and will take in the surroundings of La Pedrera reservoir.
Promoting the race this week, Councillor for Sports, Luis Quesada, said the event "is fast becoming consolidated in the regional calendar as one of the classic spring events".
The route is approximately 40 kilometres with an altitude range difference of 600 metres. Technical difficulty is considered low, which means athletes of all levels can take part.
"It's a race suitable for everyone who wants to enjoy mountain biking and nature. It's environmentally friendly, as in the days following the race, the route will be cleaned and cleared of any waste that may have been generated," added the councillor.
During the race, a 'clean point' will be provided by the Department of USW and Street Cleaning so that runners can deposit any wrappers and plastic bottles.
There are currently only about 50 of the 500 places left to participate and anybody interested in registering can do so via the websites www.pasionbtt.com and www.cronomur.com
Anyone over the age of 15 can race, although minors must present authorisation from their parents.
"The race is very well received and every year, between riders, volunteers and families, about 1,000 or 1,500 people come along," said the secretary of Pasión BTT bike club, adding that riders come from different parts of Valencia, as well as the Region of Murcia, Andalusia and the province of Albacete.
"It is a day of coexistence, fun, sport, and the promotion of Orihuela, Torremendo and La Pedrera," he added.
After the race, cyclists can enjoy a paella lunch.
