ARCHIVED - Orihuela shops dress to impress after Moors and Christians festivities are cancelled
Window dressing campaign is launched in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, after the traditional celebrations are cancelled for a second year.
Orihuela's Association of Traders has teamed up with the Moors and Christians Festival organisers and the town council to being "festive cheer" to the streets with the launch of a window dressing campaign.
Dozens of traders are already on board, transforming their shop fronts with colourful displays "in celebration of the Moors and Christians' heritage" with more expected to get involved over the next few days.
President of the traders' association, Ascensio Perez says he believes "the initiative will encourage residents and visitors to come out into our streets and enjoy the festivities in a different, abstract, but prudent and responsible fashion".
A similar initiative was held over the Easter period, with shop fronts depicting different historical themes, and it's hoped this latest initiative will be an even bigger success, while celebrating "Orihuela's tourism, commerce, gastronomy, heritage, culture and tradition".
And the window dressing campaign looks set to become a permanent fixture, running alongside the traditional Moors and Christians parades and flower offerings for years to come.
As always, Orihuela's legendary character Armengola features heavily in the festive displays, along with canvasses depicting the municipality's rich heritage.
"The streets will be like a living encyclopedia for everyone to enjoy while they're shopping," added the local authority.
