ARCHIVED - Orihuela promises long-awaited pedestrian bridge over the AP-7 by 2024
Residents in Orihuela Costa have been campaigning for a bridge pavement for years
Following years of campaigning for a pavement on the CV-941 bridge that crosses the AP-7 in Orihuela Costa, the Town Hall has finally promised to build a walkway within the next two years.
Pedestrians currently have to make the treacherous trip over the busy bridge without a pavement to get to shops and medical services in Cabo Roig, and following numerous protests to highlight the dangers and risk to human life, the council has finally pledged to "sort out the problem".
It plans to widen the bridge, built in 2008, to create a footpath - essential considering the bridge is the only access on foot from Lomas de Cabo Roig, La Cuerda and Lomas de Golf to the beaches, shops at Aquamarina and the local health centre.
Vehicles have to swerve past pedestrians due to the lack of pavement, and there is no lighting, making crossing the bridge at night even more dangerous.
The project will be funded using a 1.2 million financial bond put up by the original contractor, Urbana San Miguel SL, under an urban planning agreement 20 years ago which is currently sitting in a CaixaBank. account.
Back in 2018, hundreds of residents protested on the bridge forcing the council to give the developer two weeks to find a solution or it would seize the bank guarantee deposited when the firm built the two urbanisations in the area.
What followed was a stalemate as the developer failed to respond and the council did nothing.
But this week, the local authority requested the 1.2 million euro guarantee and will seek approval from the Public Works Ministry to build the footpath before putting the project out to tender.
Whilst the news has been welcomed by Orihuela Neighbourhood Association in Action (Avoca) and other resident groups, they are calling for immediate measures to improve safety, such as street lighting and warning signs.
