Orihuela Costa gets 20 new solar street lights to boost safety
Orihuela City Council says the new lighting will make popular promenades and public spaces safer for residents and visitors

Orihuela City Council has installed 20 new solar-powered LED street lights at various spots along Orihuela Costa, with the project led by the council's Tourism and Coastal Departments under councillors Gonzalo Montoya and Manuel Mestre.
The work forms part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations (PSTD 4) and is aimed at improving lighting in areas that previously had little or none.
The new lights have gone up along the Barranco Rubio seafront promenade, the stretch between Cala Bosque and Cala Capitán, the Cabo Roig-Aguamarina promenade and the Town Hall esplanade in Orihuela Costa, all areas that see plenty of footfall from residents, visitors and tourists throughout the year.
The project involved installing 4.5 metre high columns fitted with the latest solar LED technology. Each one runs on its own solar panel and comes with motion sensors built in, helping to keep energy use down and improve overall efficiency.
Because they don't need to be connected to the electricity grid, they're also simpler to install, which helps cut both maintenance costs and the environmental impact compared with traditional street lighting.
The council says the main aim of the project is to make roads and footpathss safer in parts of the Orihuela coastline that get a lot of foot traffic but have struggled with poor lighting in the past.
Better visibility in these areas should make things more comfortable and safer for everyone using them, particularly after dark.
The project has a base budget of €48,279, including VAT.
