One dead as Catalonia wildfire finally declared under control
The Tarragona blaze burnt more than 3,300 hectares and triggered widespread smoke across the Mediterranean coast

Firefighters in Catalonia, northeast Spain, have declared the major forest fire in Paüls (Tarragona) under control, after battling flames that scorched 3,321 hectares of land since it broke out on Monday July 7.
Although the perimeter remained stable throughout Thursday 10, firefighting teams continued to douse lingering smoke during the day.
By 8pm on Thursday, crews stationed around the affected area confirmed that no columns of smoke or hot spots posed an immediate threat of reignition. A statement from the Bombers confirmed the situation was now considered “under control”.
Despite this progress, the fire will remain under close observation for at least another 72 hours before it can be officially declared extinguished.
Overnight on Thursday, 13 crews stayed in place to monitor and secure the perimeter, as part of continued efforts to prevent further flare-ups.
The blaze, which began in a mountainous area near Paüls, was driven by strong winds and resulted in thick smoke drifting down the Mediterranean coast on Tuesday, darkening skies along much of the Levante region.
Tragically, the firefighting operation was marked by the death of a technician from the Active Forest Prevention Team (EPAF), who lost his life after falling down a steep slope while working in a rugged area.
The Bombers firefighting crew have declared a day of mourning this Friday 11, with a minute’s silence being observed at midday in tribute to their fallen colleague.
In addition to the fatality, Catalonia’s Medical Emergency System reported attending to seven other incidents during the operation, all of a minor nature.
Authorities have praised the dedication and professionalism of the firefighting teams, who have worked tirelessly in extreme conditions to protect local communities and natural areas.
