ARCHIVED - Obsolete golf course in Alicante province to be converted into sports complex
Sierra Cortina golf course in Finestrat will be transformed into a tennis sports centre
The former Sierra Cortina golf course in Finestrat, which has been obsolete for years, is to be given a new lease of life and converted into a sports complex dedicated to tennis and paddle.
Finestrat Town Hall has accepted one application put forward by Tenis & Padel Finestrat SL, which proposes the creation of a sports centre consisting of nine paddle courts and four tennis courts on the plot of land between La Cala and the old town.
Although an application has already been put forward, the project will be subject to a bidding process and public competition, and preliminary studies estimate the development will require an investment of around one million euros by the company awarded the concession.
The former golf course is located in the Sector 2 Partial Plan, in the Parque Temático area (Carrer Atenas), a large plot of 14,000 m2.
According to the mayor, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, the course has not been used for almost five years after the Town Hall terminated the management concession with businessman Francisco Murcia Puchades, claiming more than 55,000 euros in fees had not been paid.
"The Consistory has initiated the procedures to carry out this tennis and paddle project because right now Finestrat has golf facilities but no tennis complex," explained the mayor.
The local council plans to put the project out to tender within the next two months, "so that all the companies can apply".
"The idea is to create new spaces to promote a diverse range of sport and leisure for all age groups whilst generating employment and adding value to this residential area," added Pérez Llorca.
La Nucía, less than 15 km away, has 12 courts at the Ciudad Deportiva Camilo Cano, one of which is covered. If nine padel courts are created in Finestrat as planned, it would become the second-largest space for lovers of this particular sport in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province.
