Newborn puppies found dumped in a bin bag in Murcia
The Guardia Civil in Spain has launched a campaign against animal abuse and abandonment
The Guardia Civil in the Murcia municipality of Cieza rescued 11 puppies that had been tossed into a plastic bag and were about to be dumped by their owner. Officers spotted the offender just as he was about to drop the newborn dogs and their quick actions almost certainly prevented the pups from suffocating.
By a stroke of luck, Guardia Civil officers happened to be carrying out a routine citizen security patrol in the Barranco de Galán-La Macetúa area at the very moment the owner chose to abandon the puppies.
Once the agents realised what was afoot, they arrested the perpetrator, who will now face a full investigation for the alleged crime of animal cruelty and abandonment.
The tiny puppies were examined by a vet, who confirmed that they were all healthy, before being transferred to an animal shelter where they will remain until they are old enough to be adopted.
Campaign against animal abandonment
Following this harrowing incident, the Guardia Civil has taken the opportunity to remind citizens across Spain of its '#YoSíPuedoContarlo#' (‘Yes I Can Tell’ in English) campaign. Originally launched in 2017, the initiative aims to educate the public about the proper protection, management and well-being of domestic animals, as well as encourage people to report any suspected ill-treatment or abuse of pets to the authorities.
And it seems to be working. Since its inception, the Guardia Civil has noticed a definite upswing in the number of complaints it receives, meaning that people are more confident in reporting potential issues. The topic of animal abuse and neglect is also getting more air-time on social media, which all helps to create greater awareness.
Anyone who suspects that an animal is being abused has been advised to report it by calling ‘062’ or emailing 'seprona@guardiacivil.org.' The Guardia Civil can also be reached through any of its official social media profiles.
