ARCHIVED - New Alicante-Berlin flight route gets off the ground from April 2023
Low-cost airline Eurowings is also reinforcing Costa Blanca flights to Stuttgart and Dortmund
German low-cost carrier Eurowings is launching a new route between Alicante-Elche airport and Berlin from April and plans to increase flights and passenger capacity to Dortmund and Stuttgart this summer.
The airline revealed its plans to strengthen air connectivity during a meeting with Alicante City&Beach Tourist Board at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) held in Madrid.
Eurowings will offer 800 flights between the Costa Blanca and Germany this summer, and becomes the second airline to link Alicante with Berlin, joinging tour operator Jet2. The company is increasing its City Break activity by 27% in 2023, a "significant" move, according to Alicante tourist board, since "British tourism usually prefers vacation packages".
Alicante Deputy Mayor and head of the tourist board, Mari Carmen Sánchez, has already hailed this year's fair "one of the best Fitur in history" with representatives locked in back-to-back meetings and presentations last week.
Tourism resentatives from Alicante have met with tour and transport operators such as Destinia, TUI Nordic, Iryo, Jet2 and Civitatis, as well as with colleagues from Spanish Tourist Offices in The Hague, Norway, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
Agreements have been signed with Renfe, Ouigo which is launching a Madird connection this summer, and the Movelia bus transport platform, as well as with the Valencian Academy of Gastronomy and Zaragoza City Council.
And hopes are high Alicante could have a direct air link with America for the first time ever in the not too distant future. President of Alicante Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón, announced at Fitfur that the authority is working with tour operators, agencies and tourist associations in the region to establish a direct Alicante-Elche airport connection with the US.
"We came here with a wide agenda of both meetings and presentations and are proud of the work carried out to promote Alicante as a multi-product tourist destination based on a strategy of sustainability, digitisation and accessibility," said the deputy mayor.
