ARCHIVED - New wave of truck driver strikes in Spain may threaten supply chain
Spanish hauliers have provisionally agreed an indefinite national strike in coming days, though a date has yet to be confirmed
Industrial unrest continues in Spain with truck drivers announcing plans to strike in coming days, warning the work stoppages will be "much more forceful" than those staged in March.
The strike action earlier this year lasted for 20 days and brought distribution across Spain to a grinding halt. The demonstration also resulted in an accidental shooting in Madrid.
And now it appears Spain's supply chain will once again be thrown into disarray and even paralysed following a five-hour meeting of hauliers and the Platform for the Defence of Transport Association with delegates from most provinces in which it was agreed in principle to strike over the Spanish Government's lack of support amid rising fuel costs.
"We are going on an indefinite national strike in the coming days, much more forceful than in March, due to passivity of the Administration in controlling the application of the regulation which obliges shippers to pay prices which cover the costs of the service," said a Platform spokesman.
Whilst provincial representatives of the Platform voted in favour of strike action during Saturday's meeting in Madrid, other members must be consulted before a final decision is made, although a spokesman confirmed it's almost a given that stoppages will go ahead.
The weekend of November 5 and 6 is the date currently penciled in, and individual delegates will consult with members and transport workers in each province to decide whether or not to go ahead with a new indefinite strike.
The hauliers' demands are straightforward; they want assurances that they won't be forced to work for less money than their journeys are costing them, with the majority of self-employed drivers arguing they are not even breaking even at the moment.
