ARCHIVED - New anti-pollution rules as Mar Menor exceeds daily average for contaminants this weekend
The air pollution measures came in just as African dust clouds reached southeast Spain
The areas of La Aljorra and the Mar Menor coastline in Murcia briefly introduced a new anti-pollution protocol as authorities detected 51 micrograms per cubic metre of the harmful particles NO2 and PM10 in the air on Saturday September 25, exceeding the 50-microgram-per-day average.
A Level-1 preventive measure established in the framework protocol for pollution was officially activated by the Directorate General for the Environment in the region of Murcia, but quickly deactivated again after levels recorded for Sunday September 26 showed just 28 micrograms.
The short-lived incident occurred at the same time as large dust clouds are flying from Africa over the southeast of Spain on September 25, 26 and 27, bringing between 10 and 80 micrograms and the possibility of dry dust covering the area.
In view of this situation, the Environmental Department is also reminding people of the importance of using public transport instead of private vehicles, driving efficiently where possible and avoiding outdoor activities that require great physical effort so as not to breathe in too much of the dust. They have also warned people not to carry out work on building sites or burn waste.
