More than 4 million invested in modernising Pilar de la Horadada tunnel

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is investing 4.4 million euros (including VAT) to modernise and improve the energy efficiency of the Pilar de la Horadada tunnel, located on the Crevillente-Cartagena section of the AP-7 in Alicante.

The goal is to enhance safety for drivers and reduce energy consumption by upgrading facilities and equipment, which will involve intelligent lighting management using LED technology.

The renovation will include improvements to the power supply, emergency lighting, evacuation signage, emergency posts, public address system, hydrant network, ventilation systems and the installation of new automatic fire detection cameras, traffic gauges and closing barriers.

Additionally, the lighting system will be updated with dimmable LED equipment and an intelligent control and regulation system to optimise energy efficiency.

The smart lighting management system will continuously regulate lighting levels based on external luminance and tunnel occupancy, ensuring that the stretch is always perfectly illuminated for motorists and guaranteeing energy savings. Furthermore, independent vestibules will be constructed in the tunnels so that drivers and passengers can be quickly and safely evacuated in the case of emergency, and two 60 cubic metre capacity horizontal tanks will be buried for fire protection.

This project is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the Next Generation European funds, which will allocate up to 302 million euros (excluding VAT) for sustainability, energy efficiency and noise reduction measures on Spain's road network.

While no official start date for the works has been given, sources indicate that the improvement plan will be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) very soon, which is the first step in the process.

Meanwhile, the Orihuela City Council has allocated 1.3 million of its 140 million-euro 5-year budget to the Orihuela Costa, and officials have promised to prioritise the building of a pedestrian bridge over the AP-7 road which connects the district of Lomas de Cabo Roig with the coast. A new drinking water tank will also be constructed to guarantee supply to the growing population.
