ARCHIVED - Moors and Christians festival will return to the streets of Orihuela in July
One of the biggest events in the Vega Baja town's calendar will return after two years of suspensions due to Covid
After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Moors and Christians festival will return to the streets of Orihuela in July.
The Fiesta de la Reconquista is one of the town's best-known festivals and commemorates the reconquest of Orihuela from Saracen rule by the troops of Jaime II of Aragon in the 13th century.
In a statement, the Moors and Christians Association confirmed that after two years in which practically all festival events were suspended due to the restrictions imposed to combat Covid, "it seems that, at last, we are reaching the end of this exceptional situation making it possible to hold events with minimal anti-Covid measures".
"We are very excited to be able to share this festival once again in all the splendour that the circumstances allow. We are already planning events to flood the streets with joy, music and gunpowder; with tradition, history and legend; with feeling, emotion and devotion and, above all, we are going to fill the streets with the people of Orihuela," added the association.
Full details are expected to be released within the next few weeks.
