ARCHIVED - Mandatory Covid passport likely to be introduced on the Costa Blanca before December 6
Valencia president Ximo Puig is "confident" the passport scheme will be introduced ahead of the national holiday next month
After weeks of talks with representatives from the leisure and hospitality sector in the Valencia region, President Ximo Puig has revealed Covid passports are likely to be mandatory to enter bars and other leisure venues ahead of the Constitution Day in Spain on December 6.
During a press conference in Alicante, Puig explained that the proposal to be presented by the regional government to the Valencian high court is being finalised, and stressed that the move "is intended to serve as a guarantor of the greatest possible security in closed spaces where it is more difficult to keep a distance and wear a mask".
Whilst the leisure and hospitality sector is not against the introduction of the Covid passport scheme, representatives are demanding it be extended to shopping centres, football stadiums and cinemas, although Puig made no mention of expanding the compulsory certificate to other sectors.
He did, however, remind that the mask is "obligatory in enclosed spaces and necessary in open spaces where the safety distance cannot be guaranteed" as the 14-day cumuative incidence rate reaches 108 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Puig went so far as to highlight the importance of mask wearing as "one of the great assets in tackling the spread of the virus, together with the fundamental vaccination".
"For this reason we continue to urge the eight to nine per cent of the population who have not been vaccinated to do so for their own good, for the good of their families and for the good of society," added Puig.
Spain's Ministry of Health is currently studying the suitability of vaccinating children under the age of 12 against Covid, and the region's president stressed that the Valencian Community is "already prepared" for if the vaccination of children is approved "it can begin to inoculate as many minors as possible, quickly".
However, he pointed out that the immunisation of children "will only be carried out when there is scientific backing and all the necessary guarantees".
