Major blow to Irish crime syndicate as key figure arrested in Alicante
After fleeing to Spain, the suspect continued to operate as a major player on the Costa Blanca drugs scene
Spanish police have dealt a major blow to organised crime with the arrest of a 33-year-old Irish gangland figure with close ties to the notorious ‘The Family’ cartel in Alicante last week.
The unnamed individual, from the midlands in Ireland, is suspected of involvement in a high-profile murder and is expected to face charges related to drugs and firearms in a Spanish court.
The arrested suspect has a long and violent history of involvement in organised crime, dating back to his teenage years. He has a string of convictions for drug offenses in Ireland and has been officially warned by Gardaí on multiple occasions that his life was under threat due to his involvement in gangland feuds.
Despite his involvement in organised crime, the individual managed to maintain a façade of respectability, holding down a steady job in Ireland. However, as Gardaí closed in on him, he fled to Spain around three years ago, where he continued to operate as a major player in the international drugs trade.
The west Dublin-based Family has emerged as a significant force in organised crime in Ireland. The group, run by two brothers, has surpassed the notorious Kinahan cartel as the leading supplier of drugs in the country.
The Family's rise to prominence has been marked by violence and intimidation, with the group believed to be responsible for a number of brutal attacks and murders. The arrest of one of its key figures is a significant blow to the cartel and a major success for law enforcement agencies.
The exact circumstances of the arrest are not yet clear, but it is believed that the individual was caught as part of a major drugs bust.
