ARCHIVED - Lorca firefighters extinguish monster blaze in just 20 minutes
The wildfire broke out in the district of Fontanares and scorched 1.5 hectares of land
A huge wildfire broke out in the Lorca municipality of Fontanares, close to the Castle of Xiquena, at around 4.30pm on Wednesday March 15. Thanks to the rapid intervention of three teams of firefighters, the blaze was brought under control in just 20 minutes.
After securing the scorched area the land was cooled and the fire was considered completely extinguished by 6pm.
The Councillor for Emergencies and Civil Protection of Lorca, Isabel Casalduero, explained that "the total area burned was 15,000 square metres, equivalent to 1.5 hectares."
As the weather continues to heat up, she also asked the public to “exercise extreme caution in the face of burning and possible imprudence in the mountains, such as throwing garbage or lighting barbecues, given that the higher than normal temperatures at this time of year, together with the period of drought that we are going through, means that the risk of fire increases considerably”.
