ARCHIVED - Lorca comes to the aid of Turkey and Syria following devastating earthquakes
The municipality of Lorca has volunteered an expert team of ten people to help with the rescue mission

As aid workers in Turkey and Syria continue to comb through the rubble caused by a series of violent earthquakes earlier this week for survivors, Lorca has stepped up and offered a team of 10 professionals and volunteers to contribute to the rescue mission.
At least 5,000 people are believed to have lost their lives and more than 20,000 are injured in a natural disaster that has rocked the globe, and on Tuesday February 7 the Spanish government sent Navy ships and military planes to the disaster zone, carrying vital supplies and personnel to aid in the search.
Offering his condolences to the bereaved, Lorca mayor Diego José Mateos said that “unfortunately, Lorca residents are aware of the situation of uncertainty generated by earthquakes of this magnitude”, referring to the devastating earthquake that hit the municipality in 2011.
“Therefore, we want to make available to the authorities... the experience and the necessary action system after an earthquake that we have,” he said.
Mr Mateos went on to say that the City Council has contacted both the General Directorate of Civil Protection in Spain and the regional government of Murcia to volunteer its team to travel to the border between Turkey and Syria to help with the rescue effort.
The team of 10 from Lorca includes a Team Leader Emergency Technician; five emergency responders/rescuers, all of them trained in rescue in collapsed structures, as well as support staff from the Volunteer Association, with two volunteer Health Emergencies Technicians and two other Logistical volunteers.
And in addition to the expert personnel, Lorca has offered the use of a light ATV vehicle with a trailer and a mini excavator.
The mayor has reiterated “the absolute support from Lorca and the full collaboration and willingness to help in everything that is in our hands, making available all the municipal resources available to us.”
