ARCHIVED - Lightning strike starts horrendous forest fire in Jumilla
The latest forest fire to plague Jumilla has been stabilised but continues to burn up more than 400 hectares of land

A forest fire was declared this Saturday in the Sierra Larga de Jumilla, Murcia, caused by a lightning strike during an electrical storm.
This is the second large wildfire to hit the wine-producing municipality of Jumilla in the last two weeks,
and the latest of several to be started by lightning strikes.
and the latest of several to be started by lightning strikes. The fire started just a few days after the Murcia Region was declared a catastrophe zone due to the devastation caused by forest fires.
The Jumilla fire has now been stabilised after more than a hundred emergency personnel and five helicopters, two of them from the neighbouring region of Castilla-La Mancha, worked all night to extinguish it. The affected area amounts to 410 hectares and the provisional perimeter of the fire damage is 27 kilometres.

While the fire has been stabilised, it has not yet been extinguished. A lightning strike during a thunderstorm in the area last Friday was the cause of the fire, which originated on the north side of Paraje Los Cantaores
and which was fanned by the wind in the area.
and which was fanned by the wind in the area.A huge column of smoke was formed, which made it necessary to activate Level 2 of the Infomur Plan, which involves taking extraordinary measures, including the request for reinforcement brigades and resources from other communities, as well as state resources.
This latest fire comes at the tail end of the hottest summer in over 100 years, in which Spain was plagued by the worst, most destructive wildfires it has ever seen, with almost 300,000 hectares of land being burnt up to date.
