July 13 Free tour of the fish market at the port in Puerto de Mazarrón
See the fish and seafood auction as the catches are unloaded in the port!
It is often said that the best place to find fresh fish and seafood in the markets of Spain is Madrid, due to the priority given to transport from the coasts to the capital, but there is of course, one exception: jetties, harbours and ports where the fishing boats bring their catches ashore.
For these reasons the “lonja”, or fish market, in Puerto de Mazarrón, has long been one of the most important buildings in Puerto de Mazarrón, and in the summer the daily fish auction in the afternoon is one of the most important events in the day as restaurants, traders and individuals seek the very best “fruits of the sea”. In addition, in the summer it is the starting point for traditional celebrations such as the maritime procession of the figure of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron of fishermen and seafarers, on 16th July.
This summer, on the Monday before the procession, there is a chance to join this guided tour of the “lonja”, which is being held in Spanish at 16.45 on 13th July, including a visit to the auction itself as the catches are unloaded from the fishing fleet. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and, as for all such summer visits, all participants are advised to bring drinking water and sunscreen.
