July 10 to 16 Annual fiestas of the Virgen del Carmen in Puerto de Mazarron
A maritime procession on July 16 is the highlight of the celebrations of the patron of fishermen
As a town which traditionally relied on its fishing fleet for prosperity, at least until the onset of mass tourism in the second half of the last century, Puerto de Mazarrón to hold the Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of Mount Carmel), the patron of fishermen and seafarers in general, in especially high esteem, and her Feast Day on 16th July is still celebrated every summer.
One of the highlights of the summer for many is the maritime procession held on the feast day, when the small boat carrying the figure of the Virgin is accompanied across the bay towards Isla Plana and La Azohía by a flotilla of sailors joining in the event.
In 2026 a series of daily Masses are being held in the church of San José in Puerto de Mazarrón at 20.30, and at the same time the figure of the Virgen del Carmen is on display from 19.30, while the remainder of the programme is as follows:
Friday July 10
21.00: Opening speech of the celebrations by Mari Carmen Martínez Guirao, followed by a series of ceremonies in remembrance of lost and retired fishermen and sailors.
Saturday July 11
18.00: Fun and games for children in the Plaza Campeón Pedro Acosta.
22.00: Children’s musical, “Las aventuras de Stitch e Angel”, also in the Plaza Campeón Pedro Acosta.
Sunday July 12
18.30 to 20.30: Beach clean-up in the area alongside the seafront promenade, starting at the monument to Fishermen in Plaza de las Comunidades Autónomas.
22.00: A performance by pupils at the Ana Ruiz dance school in Plaza Campeón Pedro Acosta.
Monday July 13
17.00: Free guided tour of the dockside fish market of Puerto de Mazarrón: click here for further details.
Tuesday July 14
17.00: Another free guided tour of the dockside fish market.
Wednesday July 15
20.00: Floral offering to the Virgen del Carmen.
22.00: A second floral offering with a performance by pupils at the Ana Ruiz dance school in Plaza Campeón Pedro Acosta.
23.00: Concert by the choir of the Centro Social de Mayores and the traditional musicians and dancers of the Rondalla de Mazarrón in Plaza Campeón Pedro Acosta.
Thursday July 16
9.30: Holy Mass at the church of San José.
10.15 (approx): The figure of the Virgen del Carmen is carried to the fishermen’s jetty in the port.
18.00: The maritime procession sets out across the bay.
19.00 (approx): The procession returns to dry land and continues back to the church of San José.
22.30: Live music in Plaza Campeón Pedro Acosta.
