ARCHIVED - Javea begins regulating coastline parking but holds off on charging
'Parking boom barriers' have been installed at access routes to Portitxol and Granadella coves in the Marina Alta resort in Alicante province
In an attempt to control an influx of visitors to its hugely popular coves, Javea has in recent years installed boom barriers at the main access routes to Portitxol and Granadella, and this year had planned to operate a payment system.
But the Town Hall announced this week that it still has to hire a company to collect parking fees, and as such parking will be free from Thursday June 23.
As in recent years, the boom system will be in operation during peak times and the bar will be lowered when the car parks at the coves are full to "promote responsible and sustainable use of these natural spaces", reduce traffic congestion and "increase pedestrian safety".

A barrier has also been installed in Ambolo to prevent vehicle access because the cove is closed due to the risk of landslides.
Staff will be on hand to explain the parking regulations, but anybody planning on spending the day at the coves can check out the security surveillance and capacity control service on the Telegram channel 'Xàbia Info Estado Playas' where there will also be information regarding lifeguard beach flags at any given time of the day.
It's not yet clear when a payment scheme is likely to be introduced, but motorists are likely to be expected to pay 9 euros to park at the coves when it is.
