January 9 to June 2023 Alicante museum exhibits collection by celebrated Valencia artist Joaquín Sorolla
The artist's work will be displayed at Alicante's Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina for the first time to commemorate the centenary of his death

An extensive exhibition of portraits and landscapes by the late Valencia artist Joaquín Sorolla has been unveiled at Alicante's Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina (Mugbag) - the first time his work has been displayed in the city to commemorate the centenary of his death.
The collection will be in situ until the end of June 2023 as a tribute to the Luminist and Spanish Impressionist who died on August 10, 1863.
"We wanted Alicante to be a pioneer by opening the cultural calendar of 2023 with what will be the first major exhibition with which the commemoration of the Sorolla Era in the Valencian Community, his homeland, will begin," said head of Culture, Julia Parra.
"The aim is to once again attract the attention of the national and international public who will have the opportunity to take a tour of an unpublished selection of paintings of great interest, beauty and quality thanks to the collaboration of the cultural centres and collectors in the country," she added.
Entitled 'Sorolla and the Valencian painting of his time: Dialogues and contrasts', the exhibition brings together more than 100 pieces, 60 of which are on loan from the Valencia Fine Arts Museum.
In addition, there are collections from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, the Bancaja Foundation, the Casa Museo Pinazo, the Pedrera Martínez Collection, the Casa Ibáñez Museum and private collectors from all over Spain.
One of the star pieces of the exhibition is Sorolla's canvas 'Fiesta valenciana', which will be on display in Alicante for the first time until June 25.
Visitors will also get the chance to see works by other Valencian painters between 1871 and 1923.
