ITV centres in the Valencian Community vote to strike
The indefinite strike will affect all ITV test sites in Alicante from May 19
The Sitval company took over all of the ITV centres in the Valencian Community last March and their workers have already voted to begin an indefinite strike on Friday May 19.
As the union representatives themselves explain, the problem arose with the very creation of the new public company, which took over the staff of the existing ITV concessionaires, each of which determined its own pay and working conditions. Now that they are under the same umbrella, the unions allege that some staff are earning between 30% and 40% less than their colleagues who are doing the exact same work.
According to CCOO union spokesperson José Cloquell, the ITV stations in Alicante have come out the worst, particularly in Orihuela, Redován, Villena and Benidorm.
The manager of Sitval, Josep Albert Quilis, assures that the company has been working with staff and their representatives "from day one" to avoid the industrial action, but the unions claim that the employer has thus far refused to set up an official negotiating table in which to address these wage differences and other working conditions.
Mr Quilis has argued that, since Sitval is a public company, their hands are tied to some extent by a series of limitations and regulations and that before a negotiating table can be set up, the company must develop a wage bill.
In addition, he also points to the obligation to comply with what is established in the budgets of the regional government.
"We are working to solve it and our willingness to dialogue is total," said the head of the ITV, who is confident that an agreement can be reached in the coming days that allows the strike to be called off. For now, both parties are summoned to appear in the Labour Arbitration Court on Thursday May 18, to try to unblock the situation.
