Irish man gored during Murcia bull run
The 33-year-old is in a serious condition at a hospital in Cieza
An Irish man has been left with serious injuries in the Murcia town of Blanca after being gored by a bull during the traditional run that forms part of the San Roque patron saint festivities. The celebrations take place between August 8 and 16 each year and feature young, smaller bulls rather than fully-grown animals.
According to reports, the 33-year-old joined thousands of locals to be chased through the streets by bulls on Friday August 11. During the sprint he was ploughed to the ground by one of the animals before being knocked unconscious by a second animal.
A resident watching from the safety of a doorway tried to help but he too was pushed over by a rampaging bull. Finally, once all the frantic animals had passed by, a group of men leaped over the barriers and carried the Irish man to safety.
He was taken to a hospital in Cieza where his condition was described as serious but “stable.”
Pedro Gallindo, one of the medics on hand during the Blanca bull run, said the victim suffered a “fairly deep” four-inch neck wound when one of the animals gored him, along with other head and pelvic injuries.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said that a representative has been in contact with the man’s family.
“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the detail of individual cases,” a spokesperson said.
