ARCHIVED - International parade replaces St Patricks Day on the Costa Blanca: May 7
After the St Patrick’s Day parade was cancelled this year, Cabo Roig is pinning its hopes on a new party in May
A group of businesses in Cabo Roig (Orihuela Costa) began running the Saint Patrick’s Day parades in 2011. Each year, the size and popularity grew until in 2019, 20,000 spectators attended dressed in all types of greenery with their faces painted and full of good humor.
Unfortunately COVID stopped the 2020 parade just two days before it was due to take place. Organisers knew for months that the 2021 parade would not happen too so all their focus went towards making the parade as good as ever for March 17 2022. However, with appalling weather forecast for that day they regrettably had to cancel that one as well, also just two days before the event.
Once again, Cabo Roig was 100% prepared for a day of fun and festivities, but ’twas not meant to be.
Undeterred, they came up with an alternative.
May 11 is designated “International Day”. The local Town Hall pointed out that special events in Spain are often celebrated on the weekend before International Day, so they hatched a plan and put it to the parade committee to run an international parade on Saturday May 7 at 4pm, there was 100% agreement.
Now, the parade committee is inviting all international groups (Germans, Ukrainians, Polish, Scottish, Scandinavians etc.) to join them on that day to parade through Orihuela Costa in true festival fashion. Anyone wishing to register must first register by emailing paddysdayspain@gmail.com before Good Friday April 15.
The parade will follow the same route as the Saint Patrick’s Day parade, along the Cabo Roig strip.
This parade promises to be the biggest and most spectacular ever staged in Cabo Roig, providing the weather is kind this time.
After more than two years of seclusion and restrictions, we all deserve a fun-filled few hours to lighten our minds and brighten our hearts.
