Huge Montpellier snake rescued from Murcia home
Although mildly venomous, this reptile is not generally considered dangerous to humans

Venomous or not, a Murcia family can’t have been terribly pleased to discover an enormous snake slithering through their house in the district of Casillas last weekend.
The homeowners immediately contacted the Local Police when they spotted the serpent on Saturday June 10, who sent out its Ecological Patrol to deal with the unwanted guest, and the snake was eventually transferred to the El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre.
The reptile turned out to be a Montpellier snake, a species that can grow up to 2.55 metres in length and has been known to weigh in at a hefty 2 kilos. One of the largest breeds in Europe, the striking Montpellier is a common sight in Spain, Portugal and Northwest Africa.
This particular species is mildly venomous but its what is known as a rear-fanged snake; since its fangs are set so far back in its jaw, it really poses very little threat to humans.
Sightings of reptiles in built-up areas are becoming far more frequent in the Region of Murcia and last month, the same rescue crew had to capture a horseshoe whip snake that had made its way into a nursery school in Los Dolores.
