ARCHIVED - Heroic police officers in Torrevieja risk their lives to rescue unconscious drowning woman
Two cops jumped into the sea at Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio in the Vega Baja town, as waves crashed against the roacks
Heroic police officers risked their own lives to save an unconscious woman who was being thrown against rocks before being pulled further out to sea in Torrevieja.
The 44-year-old victim reportedly fell into the water in pitch black conditions whilst walking along Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio, in the 'natural pools' area, at around 8.45pm on Saturday December 11.
It's not clear who raised the alarm, but once on the scene, three Guardia Civil officers quickly spotted the woman struggling against the current in a dark rocky area, desperately trying to swim to the shore.
However, the tide was repeatedly throwing her against the rocks and then further out to sea.
Weighing up the danger of the situation and hearing the woman's cries of exhaustion, one of the officers immediately threw himself into the sea to try to reach the woman, whilst his two colleague initially remained on land to help pull her to safety.
The rescue was described as "harrowing", as the woman had lost consciousness by the time the first officer reached her, and a second cop jumped into the rough sea to bring her back to land.
They finally managed to get her to a safe area on the rocks, and with the support of Torrevieja Local Police, she was taken to a nearby location where medics were waiting.
During an initial on-site physical examination of the rescued woman, she was found to be suffering from several contusions, including one to the head which was bleeding profusely.
The victim was taken to Torrevieja's University Hospital for further treatment.
The officers escaped unscathed.
Last week, the Guardia Civil's Maritime Service rescued a 61-year-old Dutch paddle surfer who was forced to cling onto a fishing buoy for more than an hour after drifting 500 metres from Guardamar del Segura coastline, also in the Vega Baja.
