ARCHIVED - Dutch paddle surfer rescued at sea in Guardamar del Segura
The 61-year-old woman was rescued more than 500 metres from the coast in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
A paddle surfer was forced to cling onto a fishing buoy for more than an hour after drifting more than 500 metres from Guardamar del Segura coastline in high winds.
The 61-year-old Dutch woman's husband raised the alarm and a crew from the Guardia Civil Maritime Service's Rio Ladra rescue boat quickly made their way to the surfer who was displaying signs of hypothermia.
The drama unfolded at around 1.30pm when the woman decided to paddle surf off Marina de Guardamar del Segura beach.
But before long she got into difficulty and began drifting further and further out to sea due to high westerly winds, and realised her only option was to hold onto a fishing buoy and wait to be rescued.
According to the Emergency Coordination Centre of the Valencian Community, once the woman was safely onboard the Rio Ladra, she was given basic first aid and taken to the Port of Santa Pola, where her husband was waiting for her.
The rescue has prompted a warning from the Guardia Civil Maritime Service that "the sea is unpredictable and even if the wind is favourable, it can change quickly, so anyone entering the water should always consider their own strength".
"If you see that you are tiring too quickly, it is better to return before it is too late," they added.
Elsewhere in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, hero firefighters saved a dog from drowning in pitch black conditions after it fell into a rural pond.
