ARCHIVED - Greenpeace activists scale Malaga power plant accused of using Russian oil
The demonstrators have slammed the Andalucía electricity company for ‘financing the war’ in Ukraine
Around 30 Greenpeace activists scaled an electricity factory in Campanillas in Malaga to unfurl a 15-metre-wide banner on the chimney and cooling towers, slamming the plant for burning Russian gas “that finances the war in Ukraine.”
The global campaigning network has already staged protests against electricity company Naturgy: at its plant in the port of Bilbao, company headquarters in Madrid and at thirteen different commercial offices across Spain. According to Greenpeace, Naturgy is the “energy company that buys the most Russian gas in Spain,” and by continuing its operations “it is an accomplice of Putin’s war machine”.

“The exorbitant profits that the company obtains from the sale of that electricity are stained with blood because they are used to finance the war. Enough of injecting hundreds of millions to Putin in exchange for gas,” Paco del Pozo, coordinator of Greenpeace’s fossil fuel campaign, while calling for a complete embargo on Russian energy sources.
According to Greenpeace, Naturgy imports 10% of the total gas consumed in Spain from Russia, which represents around 37 tankers from Siberia each year. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, six ships worth around 690 million euros have docked in Spain: “With this money, Putin’s war machine could acquire around 300 T90 tanks,” Mr del Pozo added.
