Green cars on the rise in the Region of Murcia as hybrid and electric sales soar
The popularity of electric cars is growing partly because of a huge hike in petrol and diesel prices in Spain
The popularity of ‘green’ vehicles remained fairly underwhelming in Spain throughout 2024 but all of this has changed with the arrival of the new year and soaring petrol and diesel costs.
In the Region of Murcia, the registration of new electrified cars (electric and plug-ins) grew by an incredible 60% during the month of January alone. In addition, 27.9% more hybrids were bought, and the sale of gas-powered vehicles was up 19.35%.
The strength of this type of engine means that the sector is starting the year on a positive note, with a total of 1,387 units sold, 5.4% more than in January 2024.
In total, 917 green energy passenger cars and SUVs have been sold so far. This is an overall increase of 30% compared to the same month last year.
This means that petrol and diesel vehicles are in decline, unsurprising given that these fuels have been increasing in cost for several weeks now. Specifically, Murcia dealers sold 362 petrol cars, 22.9% fewer than last January, and 108 diesel cars, 23.4% less than in 2024.
What this means is that six out of ten cars registered in the Region of Murcia are now using cleaner, less polluting energy, since they account for a 66% share compared to 26% for petrol and 7% for diesel, according to official statistics.
Raúl Morales, communications director of Faconauto, explains that this extraordinary growth is partly down to the sector “pushing the registration of these vehicles, because they have to comply with the emissions targets imposed by the European Union for this year.”
However, he warns that there is a “slowdown in orders for electric vehicles that will be reflected in the statistics for the next few days.”
And counting all the greener registered passenger cars and SUVs (whose total figure, remember, amounts to 1,387), the best-selling brand was Toyota, with 160 sales, followed by Mercedes, with 148 and Kia, with 112.
