French woman arrested on the Costa Blanca for kidnapping her own child
The 44-year-old mother now faces extradition from Spain and a possible three year prison sentence
The National Police in Dénia have arrested a woman who was the subject of a European Arrest and Extradition Warrant issued by France. She was wanted in connection with the kidnapping of her 11-year-old son, who had reportedly been absent from school and moved home at least four times.
According to a statement released by the National Police, officers from the Citizen Security Brigade of the local police station received intelligence indicating that the woman was staying at a hotel in the Costa Blanca area.
Acting swiftly on the information, the agents proceeded to the Dénia hotel where they found the woman accompanied by her son. The child was the subject of a European alert issued in France under the category of 'Protection of Missing Minors'.
Upon identifying the suspect, a 44-year-old French national, she was promptly arrested by the authorities. The minor was then temporarily placed under the care of the National Police Station in Dénia.
Subsequently, law enforcement contacted the Alicante Juvenile Prosecutor's Office to arrange for the child's placement in a juvenile centre, where he will be looked after for the time being.
French authorities had initiated the arrest request due to allegations that the woman had failed to ensure her son's attendance at school. Additionally, suspicions arose regarding the woman's mental well-being as she had reportedly changed residences four times within a short span, without informing the other parent.
The detainee has been handed over to the Dénia Guard Investigating Court. If convicted, the woman could face a sentence of up to three years in France for the alleged offense.
Just a few months ago, a British child who went missing in Spain six years ago turned up in France, with his mother and grandfather being accused of 'kidnapping' the boy.
